(Lui storpia il nome Tony in Tone, soprannome datogli in studio) Original tracks were recorded to 2" Ampex 456 with one solo on ADAT as Tony had one at home back then. I think it was either on "Falls" or "Another World" - I should check my notes :-) 3 songs were tracked at another studio in Coventry, then Tone found out about DEP and booked in to try some more songs. We cut the other 5 live as a band then worked on building them. Vocals with Glenn was more than easy - he could sing the Yellow Pages and make it sound great. We did some rough mixes (which, along with roughs from the Coventry sessions, obvoiusly became the bootleg) and that was the end of it as the Sabb reunion was on its way.
Cut to 2004.... Multitracks were converted to Pro Tools earlier this year and then the Drums were cut at Tone's home studio directly to PT. Jimmy had a headphone mix of Glenn and Tony along with a combo of original drums and clicks in certain places. It was an amazing thing that he was able to play to that - remember, the original demos weren't ALL done to clicks.
It was great hearing Jim's overall strong approach and his drum fills giving the tracks the transitions they deserved, but the spinetingling moment was when he broke into the 2nd verse of "Fine" and opened up the hats and brought in the Snare - at that moment the track that I thought was the weakest became (i think) one of the strongest on the album.
To everyone else regarding DEP - I'm not really sure if it stands for anything. Some told me it was a Jamaican slang phrase, others said it was just something the band (UB40) came up with as a name for their record label. The studio was originally called "The Abbatoir" as it was a slaughterhouse's storage facility before they got hold of it.
All I can say about any Studio stories is that I'll try to have a think, but mostly I just remember that my ribs ached from laughing. I hate to shatter any illusions, but Tone is one of the funniest people I've had the opportunity to work with.

I've really considered loads of alternatives to Protools. I own Digital Performer and Logic, but the Editing and workflow has been with me since 1992 when I started with Sound Tools and then used Protools version 1.
I also have been using Apple since 1988 and, although I feel PC's are also great, I cannot spend time learning a new set of tools. Incedentally, Dick, who mastered the album, used Sonic Solutions on OS9 on an old Beige G3.
I also will never criticise any platform as long as people are producing great work with it, so I just stick to what works for me
On the other point... Tone is a fantastic name for him. Mike Clement nicknamed his studio Tone Hall - f**king brilliant. He is the Tonemeister as far as I'm concerned.
To address the question about the extra line in "Same Man" - we kinda just went with the flow of what worked when mixing it properly. Didn't really reference the original "demo" mixes at all. Check out Another World guitar solos - definite differences

Pretty much basic stuff for the recordings. Back at DEP I would use combo of the Amek Angela Mic pres and EQs and Neve 33122 outboard Pres/EQs.
Guitars usually Shure SM57 and Sennheiser MD421 via a couple of Compressors.
Bass was a Warwick through a DI (Amplitube was used during the mix to give it a cabinet sound). Nowadays I use a Sansamp Bass Driver DI when recording. 99% of bass players prefer it to the sound of their amp.
Vocals would have been a Neumann U47 FET through an Amek 9098 Mic Pre/EQ then one side of a Tubetech LCA2B compressor, finally through a Urei 1176 to tape.
My chains are usually simple and very rarely via the console busses. Keep the path short.
New drums were Combo of Amek Purepath and Focusrite pre's direct to Protools. Mics were Kick Shure Beta 52 (though now I use an Audix D6 - best kick mic ever, and an NS10 speaker as a transducer pickup), Snare SM57, Hats AT4031, Toms Senn 604's, OH Earthworks QTC-1s (Courtesy of Mike Clement - Tone's guitar tech and all round brilliant guy)
I really like the GML Eq for the stereo buss being fed by a Manley Vari-Mu compressor. That was my path. The Mastering engineer then used Prism Maselec stuff as part of his chain

Reverbs were TC M3000. Everything else was plugs. Stereo buss out DtoA Apogee PSX100 into Manley VariMU then into Millenia Stereo EQ then AtoD Apogee PSX100 into 2nd PT system.
Don't know about Geoff Nichols' keys, but Don used a Kurzweil PC88 (for piano and control) along with a Yam DX7 and Kurz K2000. There are a couple of bits of keys left on the mixes, but they have been crunched to hell to sound more in line with the rest of the sounds (sansamp and amplitube)
I played a bit of Hammond on "Don't Drag the River" during the breakdown. It was a Korg BX-3 through a Leslie simulator. No soft stuff back then.
